Word Work

What is Word Work?

Word Work is the study of words. During word work we are not only interested in specific words, but also in the spelling patterns and rules that we can apply to other words as well. We are using the series Words Their Way in our Word Work program.

Why do we do Word Work?

We do Word Study in order to because becoming more proficient as a speller helps make you a better writer and increases your ability to get your ideas down on paper.

How do we do Word Work?

Every Monday, Mrs. Legassie will meet with each Word Work group during Literacy Workshop. Together we will examine your words for the week and discuss the spelling patterns you are focusing on. After we are sure everyone understands the lesson, you will head back to your desk to independently begin the Word Work Menu. This is a selection of activities to complete with your Word Work lists during Literacy Workshop time throughout the week.

At the beginning of the year, we did Spelling Assessments. The results of these assessments helped us determine what spelling patterns you most need to work on. Our class has been divided into four Word Study groups to make sure you are learning at a level that is Just Right for you. We will do another Spelling Assessment at the end of each term to see how we have improved.
