Poetry Party
What is Poetry Party?
Poetry Party is your chance to recite poems you have memorized in front of your classmates.
Why do we do Poetry Party?
There are lots of reasons why we do Poetry Party. First of all, we do Poetry Party because it is fun! Another reason for doing Poetry Party is to practice our Oral Language skills, especially our ability to speak with expression and clarity. Finally, memorizing poems for Poetry Party improves our memory which helps our brain become stronger. It is like exercise for our brains!
How do we do Poetry Party?
We have Poetry Party just before lunch every other Tuesday. Everyone chooses a Green level poem to start the year. We also have yellow, red, and black poems to choose from as you get better at memorizing poems. Each level of poem gets longer and more difficult.
You are required to participate in one Poetry Party before Christmas, one between January and Spring Break, and another one between April and June. At the end of the year we will have a final Poetry Party that we will invite our parents to. Everyone will recite a poem of their choice at the Poetry Party Celebration.
When you are ready to recite your poem, write your name on the Poetry Party Sign Up by the classroom door. Once you have recited your poem, you can choose a new one from the green Treasure Chest. Make sure you record the poem’s title and number on your Poetry Party Record sheet that is in the Poetry section of your Literacy Workshop binder.
