Read to Self
What is Read to Self?
Read to Self is our silent, independent reading time.
Why Read to Self?
We read to ourselves to become better readers. By regularly practicing our reading we increase our comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expand our vocabularies.
How do we Read to Self?
Read to Self takes place during our Literacy Workshop block. You are expected to read Just Right (JR) books for a minimum of 30 minutes at school each day. JR books are the books that will help you become a better reader each time you read. They are books you understand well and can enjoy. You read the book smoothly and have only a few places where you need to slow down to figure out a word or think more about meaning. It is okay to sometimes read Easy (E) or Challenging (C) but most of the books you read should be JR. When you Read to Self, you have three main tasks – to read the whole time, practice your reading strategies, and to record what you read in your Literacy Workshop binder.
