Literacy

What is Literacy Workshop?

Literacy is the ability to read and write. Our Literacy Workshop is a time when you are all working on reading or writing. It is in some ways a combination between Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, and Spelling, but with more independence to choose what task you want to work on.

Why Literacy Workshop?

The goal of Literacy Workshop is to become better readers and writers. We also want to become people who can work responsibly and independently when given freedom to choose our tasks.

How do we do Literacy Workshop?

We have Literacy Workshop time scheduled every day for at least an hour. There are three main things that happen during our Literacy Workshop:

Whole Class Mini-Lesson:

Each Literacy Workshop period begins with a whole class, mini-lesson. These lessons will cover topics such as reading strategies to support comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanded vocabularies. Along with these reading lessons, we will also have lessons on how to become better writers such as developing ideas, varying sentence types, varying word choice, developing voice, and organizing your writing. We will also work on basic writing skills such as punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, and editing or revising your writing.

Independent Work Time

Following the mini-lesson, you can choose between three main tasks for the first portion of the Independent Work Time: Read to Self, Work on Writing, or Word Work. Part way through, you will be asked to switch tasks so that each day you work on both your reading and writing skills.

Guided Learning

While you work independently, your teachers will be working with small groups of students to help you develop skills that will make you better readers and writers.  The skills we work on during Guided Learning will depend on what you need most in order to be successful.
