Outdoor Field Trip Tomorrow!

February 13, 2018 • mrslegassie

I hope you have all had an absolutely wonderful Family Day weekend! It is so nice to see the sun shining!

Just a reminder to dress appropriately for the weather tomorrow. According to the forecast, it should be dry but VERY cold.

We will be leaving the school around 10:45am and returning shortly before the end of the day. We will be outside for the majority of that time.

Dress your child for a day in the mountains (just without the snow!)

Cold Weather Clothing Tips

  • Dress your child in layers. A moisture wicking base layer is helpful, followed by a thicker warm fleece type mid-layer. A waterproof outer layer is helpful even if it’s not raining or snowing as the ground may still be damp and frosty in the woods. This layer also serves to cut down on wind blowing through the layers. Snow pants could work for this layer if you don’t have rain pants.
  • When in doubt, add an extra layer! It’s better to be too warm and remove a layer than to be too cold and not have anything to add.
  • Head, Hands, Feet! Warm Gloves & Toques are very important! A scarf is a good idea too. Also, winter boots or rain boots with warm wool or double layered socks is a good plan.

Please send your child to school wearing their base layer and pack the rest of the layers in their backpacks. I will give them lots of time to layer up before we head out.

If your child doesn’t already have a complete change of clothes at school, it’s probably a good idea to send a complete change of clothes to school tomorrow – just in case!

If you have any questions about what to wear or our field trip in general, please feel free to email me. I will check my email a couple more times tonight.

Welcome to Second Term!

January 15, 2018 • mrslegassie

We wanted to take a moment to officially welcome you all back from Winter Break! We have many fun and exciting things planned for this term. Here are some of the highlights:

Literacy Workshop

This term we will be continuing with the Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Word Work sections of our Literacy Workshop.

Raz Kids

We will also be adding  Listen to Reading. This will mainly come through the use of an awesome online leveled reading program called Raz Kids.  Students will have multiple opportunities throughout the week to work on the Raz Kids program in the classroom. This program is also accessible to students at home. Log in information will be sent home later this week. All students encouraged to bring a set of headphones to school ASAP in order to fully interact with the program. We plan to introduce Raz Kids on Tuesday, January 16th.

Poetry Workshop

On Mondays and Tuesdays we will be focusing our writing lessons on Poetry and figurative language. We will also be continuing with Poetry Party every Tuesday.

Novel Study

Students will soon be starting their second Novel Study of the year. Mrs. Smith has a number of great novels picked out for each of the reading groups.

Home Reading

Please encourage your child to read for 20-30 minutes every evening and record the minutes on the calendar in their green Home Learning duotang.

Word of the Week

Due to time constraints in the classroom, we have shifted from Word of the Day to Word of the Week. Look for a new word in your child’s agenda every Monday night. Try to use the Word of the Week in your family conversations throughout the week.

There are many other fun and  interesting plans in the works for the rest of our year together. Stay tuned…

Reminder: Please send headphones to school as soon as possible.

Christmas Concert and Prize

December 13, 2017 •

The Christmas Concert is tomorrow afternoon and evening. Your children have been working hard to get ready for it. They have been requested to wear “nice Christmas outfits” and if they have one a Santa hat. If they do not have a Santa hat there is an alternative at the school for them to wear.

The class has been working with a points system for the last few weeks as some of you may have heard by now. They gain points for good behaviour and working hard, and lose points for being off task or too noisy. We set a goal and chose a prize for when they achieved their goal. The class reached their goal last Friday and had chosen to have a PJ movie day for their prize. They will be receiving their prize on Friday afternoon, and they will be allowed to wear their PJ’s to school on Friday at your discretion.
