Welcome to Second Term!

January 15, 2018 • mrslegassie

We wanted to take a moment to officially welcome you all back from Winter Break! We have many fun and exciting things planned for this term. Here are some of the highlights:

Literacy Workshop

This term we will be continuing with the Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Word Work sections of our Literacy Workshop.

Raz Kids

We will also be adding  Listen to Reading. This will mainly come through the use of an awesome online leveled reading program called Raz Kids.  Students will have multiple opportunities throughout the week to work on the Raz Kids program in the classroom. This program is also accessible to students at home. Log in information will be sent home later this week. All students encouraged to bring a set of headphones to school ASAP in order to fully interact with the program. We plan to introduce Raz Kids on Tuesday, January 16th.

Poetry Workshop

On Mondays and Tuesdays we will be focusing our writing lessons on Poetry and figurative language. We will also be continuing with Poetry Party every Tuesday.

Novel Study

Students will soon be starting their second Novel Study of the year. Mrs. Smith has a number of great novels picked out for each of the reading groups.

Home Reading

Please encourage your child to read for 20-30 minutes every evening and record the minutes on the calendar in their green Home Learning duotang.

Word of the Week

Due to time constraints in the classroom, we have shifted from Word of the Day to Word of the Week. Look for a new word in your child’s agenda every Monday night. Try to use the Word of the Week in your family conversations throughout the week.

There are many other fun and  interesting plans in the works for the rest of our year together. Stay tuned…

Reminder: Please send headphones to school as soon as possible.

Aboriginal Presentation Monday

December 2, 2017 • mrslegassie

We have another Aboriginal Presenter coming in on Monday afternoon to share her knowledge of “Plants in Our Environment”

As part of the presentation, students will be using food colouring to tie-die a piece of fabric. It is suggested that students do not wear their best clothes on Monday as the food colouring may stain if spilled.

A Few Reminders & A Request

October 11, 2017 • mrslegassie

Library Book Exchange Tomorrow

Due to Thanksgiving Monday, we will be exchanging library books tomorrow morning. Please remember to bring any library books to return or renew tomorrow.

Scholastic Orders Due Friday

Please ensure all Scholastic Orders are returned by Friday.

Unmatched Socks?

Do you have any unmatched socks floating around your house? If so, we can use them as erasers for our mini white boards.  Please send them in any time!

Today’s Agenda Note

Today, all students wrote “Tomorrow I will be respectful and listen to the teacher.” Our class was particularly gregarious today, which often happens after a long weekend! As a result we ended the day with a discussion about the importance of stopping and listening when the teacher is talking. We also discussed the importance of choosing a good spot to work away from friends who may be a distraction. We look forward to a more focused day tomorrow!

Project requirements:

  • crayon or pencil crayon
  • Each square should be fully coloured.
  • The letters should be in a pattern. For example, Caleb – all Cs are the same, all As are the same etc.

I will try to add a picture to this post tomorrow.

Donations?

September 28, 2017 • mrslegassie

Classroom Items Needed:

If you have any of the following items that you would be willing to donate to our class, we would much appreciate it.

Decks of Cards

Throughout the year we will be playing lots of math games to work on our fact fluency and computation skills. Many of these games require decks of cards. If you have any extra decks of cards and would be willing to donate them to our class Math Tools supply, we would be exceptionally grateful.

Sterilite 3 Drawer Storage Bins

Organization is essential to the efficiency of a classroom. We are still in the process of getting classroom materials set up and ready for students. If you have any of these Sterilite 3 drawer units lying around collecting dust, we will gladly take them off your hands! I am kicking myself for giving away 3 of them when we moved in April!

Picture Books

Our personal classroom library has more than 500 books for students to choose from. The high majority of the books are early chapter books or novels. I would love to build our collection of picture books to ensure that we have enough books at the right level for all students. If you have any previously loved picture books to donate, please send them in any time. We would be grateful for chapter book donations any time as well, but currently have a greater need for picture books.

If you wish to donate any of the above, please shoot me an email and let me know or just send them in with your child. My email address is hlegassie@sd35.bc.ca

And please know we are extremely grateful your willingness to support our classroom in this way.
