Poetry Workshop

What is Poetry Workshop?

Poetry Workshop is when we take time to explore the art of poetry. We both read and write poetry during Poetry Workshop.

Why do Poetry Workshop?

In a way, everything you need to know about reading and writing exists within a poem. You will learn to express the most amount of thought and feeling in the fewest carefully chosen words. Our poetry unit is called: For the Love of Words   – and it is my hope that through Poetry Workshop you will learn to love words and their potential.

How Do We Do Poetry Workshop?

Poetry Workshop happens twice a month. Each workshop starts with a whole class mini-lesson. These lessons may be about reading and responding to poems, figurative language such as similes and metaphors, or writing different styles and forms of poetry.

After the mini-lesson you will have individual work time to complete any task that is assigned during the mini-lesson. Once that is complete you can choose one of the Poetry Exploration activities to work on.

Throughout the year, you will be working on a Poetry Anthology.  This anthology will be a collection of poems you find that you like and poems that you have written.
